Case Study: Premodern Text

For my premodern case study, I’ve been looking at McClay Library’s MS 1/17, an incomplete fifteenth century Book of Hours.

Half an Hour With a Book of Hours – an introduction to the book, and to Books of Hours in general.

Illiterate Literature Appreciation – a discussion of illiterate book owners in the Middle Ages, and its resulting impact on the materiality of books, fashioning them into luxury items and status symbols.

Biblioclasts: Breaking Books (and Bibliophiles’ Hearts) – MS 1/17’s damaged pages lead to a discussion about bookbreaking and the work of Otto Eke.

House of Hours, Book of Leaves – a comparison of glossed religious medieval manuscripts and Mark Z. Danielewski’s debut novel.
